Prof. G. MohanGopal

Prof. G. Mohan Gopal is Director of the National Judicial Academy since July, 2006. The Director, NJA is the Principal Executive Officer of NJA. The Director is appointed by the Chairman, the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India.
Dr. Gopal holds a masters and a doctorate degree in law from Harvard University (Harvard Law School), USA and a bachelor's degree in law from Delhi University.
Dr. Gopal was Director (Vice Chancellor) of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore (2000-2003).
Dr. Gopal taught law at Georgetown University Law School, Washington, DC for nine years as an adjunct professor (1991-2000).
Dr. Gopal served for over 18 years at the World Bank in Washington, DC where he became Chief Counsel in the Legal Department of the World Bank. Previously, Dr. Gopal served from 1980-83 as a legal counsel at the Asian Development Bank in Manila. Dr. Gopal has also taught law for three years at the National University of Singapore.
Dr. Gopal served as a member of the State Planning Board of the State of Kerala in India., chaired by the Chief Minister of Kerala, from 2004-2006 upon his return to India in 2004 after resigning his position at the World Bank
Dr. Gopal has served as a member of the University Grants Commission, India's national regulatory body for higher education.
Dr. Gopal was a member of the Oversight Committee on Reservations in Central Educational Institutions, appointed by the Prime Minister (Moily Committee).
Dr. Gopal is a member of the Board of Governors of the National Institute for Securities Management (NISM), established by the Government of India; and a member of the Governing Board of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Medical Institute, Trivandrum (an All India Institute of Medical Sciences of the Government of India).
Dr. Gopal's two main areas of academic interest and experience include: (i) the institutional and conceptual framework for law and justice (including, in particular, study of the Indian legal and judicial system; changing concepts of law and justice; the role of legal and judicial systems in national development; and the legal dimensions of globalization); and (ii) international economic law including international arbitration.

Dr. Gopal has developed and taught courses on international law, economic law, law and development and the legal dimensions of globalization. Dr. Gopal is an author of several papers on legal and judicial systems and their relationship to development as well as on economic law and international law.
